NARAL Pro-Choice Connecticut PAC Endorses Candidates For State Representative And Senate

October 5, 2016

Hartford, CT — Connecticut politicians are showing that reproductive choice has broad bipartisan support in 2016. Connecticut has clear constitutional protection for abortion and is one of 17 states that cover all or most medically necessary abortions through Medicaid. In national political campaigns, choice has been a debated topic, with the presidential ticket providing a clear division between pro-choice Democrats and anti-choice Republicans. This division isn’t so clear when we look down ballot in CT where some Republicans hold similar pro-choice positions to their Democratic rivals.

NARAL Pro-Choice Connecticut is endorsing 49 of the candidates running for Connecticut state representative seats. Of these six (12%) are Republicans; Todd Brown (29th District), Prasad Srinivasan (31st), John Scott (40th), Aundre Bumgardner (41st), Scott Storms (60th), Douglas Losty (93rd). By contrast, 41 Democrats, one Green Party candidate, and one unaffiliated candidate are being endorsed for house races. Eight candidates for Connecticut State Senate are endorsed, all of whom are Democrats. In 2014, NARAL Pro-Choice Connecticut endorsed only a single Republican pro-choice candidate; Barbara Ruhe who ran for senate in the 1st District.

Endorsed Republicans expanded on their framing of choice as an issue of personal liberty. Scott Storms stated, "Our state has a strong tradition of promoting equality and justice for and among its people. As such, I believe that all women are entitled to choice with dignity and should be supported by social policies and the enactment of laws which protect against infringement of their right to choose as a matter of personal liberty.” Along similar lines, Douglas Losty also expanded on why he supports choice: "Matters of abortion and birth control are matters of individual choice. While I am a Republican, I have a libertarian view and think that in general, with rare exceptions, government should not be involved in such issues.”

Democrats, however, dominate the endorsement list, and make clear their support for pro-choice politics. As Senator Beth Bye stated, ""Protecting women's health and right to choose is a critical role we play in the legislature. NARAL Pro-Choice Connecticut is an important partner in furthering that pro-health agenda.” Senator Dante Bartolomeo reiterated this position: "One of the reasons that I first chose to run for State Senate was my opponent's support for the de-funding of Planned Parenthood. I feel very strongly that all women have the right to make reproductive choices. There are no circumstances under which a woman's right to choose should be breached.”

Overall, Jillian Gilchrest, President of NARAL Pro-Choice Connecticut PAC said "I am optimistic that these endorsements show how widely pro-choice issues are supported in Connecticut. We look forward to making our state the best in the nation for reproductive rights!”
